Choose specific words from the story, such as sleigh, reindeer, snow, cap, jelly etc. and choose as many words as there are presents to be opened. Put the words on pieces of paper and put them in a bowl are Christmas stocking to be drawn. Hand out the presents to all individuals according to the tags but tell them not to begin opening their gifts. Have each person draw from the bowl or stocking one piece of paper per present and place the papers on top of each present. Then the leader reads the story “Twas the night before Christmas” and pauses as each special word is read. Have the person open the gift and then continue. Read all the way to the end! It may help to copy the words to the story on paper and underline all the key words so that the reader knows what to expect.
